Is an elliptical cross trainer easier than running?

I’ll give you the easy & quick answer - for me it’s WAY easier!

As I’ve aged, I am starting to have problems with my joints hurting. Hips, knees and ankles can be particularly achy if I run of use a treadmill.

And, it’s a fact - elliptical cross trainers are much easier on your body than running/ Why? Mostly, it’s because of impact - or the lack of impact on the elliptical. Think of it this way - when you run, most people slam or come down pretty hard on their feet . It has to be that way in order to officially be called “running.” This slamming, or shock, has got to be absorbed somewhere else in the body - it’s absorbed in the joints. Most of the time people jog on hard surfaces - asphalt or concrete. There is no cushioning on these surfaces. Sometimes, there’s a little bit of cushioning with a treadmill, but not much.

Over time, the cartilage in the joints can become sore and damaged - that would mean pain for that person.

When you use an elliptical trainer, there is no shock involved - just smooth motion as the machine steps one foot in front of the other. I notice this smoothness right away - no pain or soreness for me!

Best Treadmills

This is a great question - what are the best treadmills? As someone who has designed treadmills professionally, I’ll give you my opinion on this subject.

Finding the best treadmills really depends on you, and your needs and desires. I can give you some great tips on what’s important to have on a treadmill but, ultimately, you will have to decide what will suit you best.

Power
The vast majority of treadmills are powered by an electric motor. This motor drives the belt that you walk or run on. It’s really important that you get a treadmill that has a big enough motor to do the work without being stressed. A motor that has a continual rating of around 3 horsepower is ideal for a home treadmill. Be careful here - some cheap treadmills will brag that they have a 3 PEAK horsepower motor. This is not the same as CONTINUAL horsepower. In my opinion, a 3 PEAK horsepower motor is inadequate for long treadmill life.

Structure
Even though it may cost a few dollars more, I recommend buying a treadmill (or elliptical trainer) with a quality, steel structure.

Unfortunately, many of the cheaper treadmills just are not built well enough for long life. If your exercise consists mainly of easy and slow walking, then a cheaper machine may do - MAY do. The best treadmills have a great structure that can take years of pounding as you jog or run on your treadmill.

Wow - this is a really strange question! But, is it really as strange as you think?

Here’s a true story. Years ago, I was designing exercise equipment for a top-notch manufacturer, and was at a big exercise show in Chicago - as a technical help. I was kind of hanging around the elliptical machines towards the end of a slow day when one of the trainer/salespersons came over and started talking to me.

She said to try the elliptical backwards! “You can really improve your balance - if you don’t fall off!” Also, going backwards works muscles that you don’t normally use. Remember, as we age, we lose balance. Balance is all-important because if we fall, injuries can be severe.

What’s a major cause of death among seniors? Injuries sustained from a fall. So it only makes sense to “exercise” your balance any time you can. My trainer friend told me to add backwards motion to my elliptical trainer workout - even do it on the treadmill! And I do!

Here’s a great question - does a Proform Elliptical Trainer burn more calories than jogging?

Well, really  - I posed this question to a personal trainer friend, and he laughed a bit, thought about it and said “I’ll get back to you on that.”

When he finally came around, this is basically what he told me.

A calorie is a calorie - if you burn 400 calories per hour jogging or if you burn 400 calories per hour on the elliptical trainer - it’s the same thing. There is no calorie that’s worth more than any other calorie.

It’s all about the effort you put forth. Whether you jog, run on a treadmill or use an elliptical trainer, if you put out 400 calories worth of effort - you’ll burn 400 calories!

And, if you don’t go home and eat 400 calories of food - you’ll most likely lose 400 calories-worth of food, around 1/4 pound.

There really is no xercise that automatically burns more calories than another. It’s all about the effort. Sure - a half hour of stair-stepping will burn more calories than a half hour on the elliptical trainer. But, stair-steppers require much more effort than most forms of exercise - try it for 10 minutes and you’ll see what I mean!

I was recently talking with a friend who wants to get fast results and lose weight from working out on  his elliptical exercise machine. He’s not really in shape - yet, but wants to speed up the process. Here’s the advice a personal trainer gave him.

Try to get conditioned slowly if you want to stay in shape for the long term. If you work way too hard in the beginning and expect fast results - you might be disappointed. Start slowly at first, only exercising at a comfortable pace for you. You really want to be successful, long-term, and if you rush it, you may get burn-out.

Watch your diet - don’t eat a bunch of stuff that is not good for you. I know - this sounds like your mother talking, but the truth is, if you want great output, you must have great input. And that means the best foods. Exercise alone won’t get you in shape - you must provide good nutrition.  Even athletes can be overweight from poor eating habits.

For the best results, you should cut out high fructose corn syrup in your diet. High fructose corn syrup - that stuff is poison. It messes with your metabolism, can cause diabetes and can make it  much more difficult to lose weight and get in shape. Here’s the Wikipedia lowdown on high fructose corn syrup.

Also, watch the sugars and heavy starches you’re eating. You need the right carbohydrates to get in shape using your elliptical exercise machine.  The better carbs to eat are the long-lasting ones, like whole-grain pastas, brown rice and legumes (beans). Also, nuts (almonds are great) can provide some great healthy carbohydrates too.

It would be a shame to put forth the effort and spoil the results by eating the wrong foods.
